Why Consistency Still Wins In a Trend-Driven World
It seems every week brings a new communications trend, platform, AI tool or content format we should all be following. A new way brands are told they “have” to show up to remain relevant in the marketplace.
The brands that build the strongest relationships with their audiences, however, aren’t the ones chasing every trend. They’re the ones people recognize, understand and trust.
Simply put, trends get attention. Consistency builds brands.
I realize in today’s “what’s-next culture,” this may be an unpopular viewpoint, but hear me out. Brands shouldn’t let their FOMO (fear of missing out) overrule the importance of creating recognition and building trust with their audiences.
We’ve all been there. Something catches our eye once and before you know it, it feels like it’s literally everywhere. Everyone is talking about it, and we want to be a part of the conversation. It’s natural.
Before jumping on the bandwagon, though, don’t forget to ask yourself the most important question. Does this make sense with who we are and what we do?
If the answer is an easy yes, then you should definitely roll up your sleeves, put your creative hat on and get to work. If it’s a no – or you’re trying really hard to convince yourself it’s a yes – sitting this one out might be the smartest decision for your brand.
Consistency in how you show up – your messaging, tone, visual identity and interactions – is what creates brand recognition. That consistency should extend well beyond marketing. What customers see and hear from your brand should align with what employees hear from leadership, what investors hear from executives and what the media hears from your organization.
If following a specific trend leaves your audience thinking “Wow, that’s really different,” “I can’t believe they did that” or “That seems really out of character for them,” you are probably missing the mark.
Your audience shouldn’t have to relearn who you are every time they encounter your brand. Strong, established brands don’t have to introduce themselves when they enter a room. Audiences immediately know who they are, what they do and what they are about. There is an automatic understanding of the relationship they enjoy with that brand.
Consistency is also critical in building trust. Whether it’s with customers, employees, investors or the media, repeated alignment between what you say and what you do builds credibility. Familiarity matters. People rarely remember a message after hearing it once, and trust certainly isn’t built through a single interaction. Consistent messages and experiences build recognition. Recognition creates familiarity and over time, familiarity helps build trust.
Consistency doesn’t mean being stagnant or boring. Brands should evolve. They should innovate. They should remain relevant. The key is knowing how to do so naturally without losing your core identity, voice or purpose – the things that set you apart.
Trends are a useful tool in doing so when they support the brand. They aren’t a stand-alone strategy, though, and you shouldn’t follow one simply because it seems like everyone else in your space is doing so. Instead, find new ways to lean into what makes you, you. Longevity, expertise, niche services, passion for your mission – these are the things that make you unique. Don’t abandon them trying to be the next “it” thing.
Before asking whether your brand should follow the latest trend, ask a more important question: Does your audience know exactly who you are?
